Family Therapy

Given the importance of the understanding and addressing the larger social environment, we also offer family counseling. Although some clients choose to enter family therapy as the first choice of treatment, other times family work is incorporated after a period of individual, adolescent, or couples therapy. Aileen can assist families, large or small, in addressing issues that have previously caused conflict between family members.

Family therapy is based on the concept that the family is an individual social system, unique with its own styles of communication and structure . Communication styles are developed by many determinants , including the family members personalities, the parents' values and beliefs , and the significance of extended family (uncles, aunts, & grandparents). As a result, each family develops its own individual personality, which affects all of its members, based on these factors.

Types of issues addressed and treated in family therapy:

  • Divorce, remarriage, blended family issues
  • Resolving conflict
  • Improving communication
  • Healthy boundaries between family members
  • Military deployments, family issues specific to military families; spouses and dependants
  • Family transitions, such as leaving for college, arrival of a new baby, sibling rivalry or loss of a loved one
